BIRD Science -:- Family Discovery - A Trip to Effie Yeaw Nature Center!

Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Charmichael, CA

Kids love animals and nature, and whether they know it or not they are learning about science here at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center.

Effie Yeaw Nature Center

Outside the center. Is that a rainbow? Oh, yah!

Coming on a whim, I'm so glad I did. I was traveling to Charmichael, CA for a doctor's appointment and noticed on Google Maps a river and green open space very close to my location.  I decided to check out this hidden go-to place, hoping for an adventure.

What I found coming in was a wide-open space, grass, trees, a massive park. There are many places to picnic, there is golf to play, there are many nature trails. There is a riverfront that attracts many to swim and play in the water and play on the shore. It's a giant park with animals everywhere. The first thing I saw driving in were about eight wild turkeys fielding for breakfast, grey squirrels abundant everywhere, gathering and burying acorns I witnessed a man photographing a wild coyote out in the open grass as well. Something you don't see every day.

I parked at the lot entrance reading "Effie Yeaw Center" and walked into a quaintly groomed, magical, little park with a polliwog pond and pathway entrance. It is designed for easy access for the handicap to enjoy peaceful nature. A roundabout information hull displayed at the right to peruse.
I couldn't resist sitting down at one of the many picnic tables provided.

I wanted to take in the essence of the park as it encouraged me to walk back into time and be transformed into a simpler way of life. A dwelling, a thatched grass dome to the right pulled at my visual curiosity. On exhibit, three Nisenan/Maidu Native American Tulle homes, 9ft in diameter with open roof for the release of smoke in my assumption. Out in the front a large community rock, used for grinding acorns to feed the community. Such a different way of life for all to imagine. A wonderful comparison for open discussion for all.

Further up the path a butterfly garden. I could only imagine what full bloom would look like, as it was currently offseason for flowers, but I did imagine the beauty and the many buzzing visitors that might partake in the gathering of pollen and nectar.  With the cooling shade of tall Oak Trees,

Across the way, I spied the Effie Yeaw entrance and decided to go in. I was greeted with such a warm welcome, I felt very special. I asked a few questions and told them I was going to videotape and share on my Youtube Channel. They were happy to help.

Then, unexpectedly, one of the Nature Center guides came out with a wild bird surprise! There on her arm was a Cooper's Hawk named Orion. She told me all about him and how the center provides for the animals if they are unable to cope in the wild.

" Orion"

Inside you will discover a wonderful place of natural science, raptors, many different types of animals and birds and habitats. And more on the Nisenan/Maidu Native Americans.
