I tried to keep the parts short and even added some extra footage for better understanding. Part 1 Insect Overview,   Part 2 Spiders, Part 3 Bee's. Enjoy! #Insects #Spiders #Bee #Science #Nature

Native American Poetic Science For the Youth

A Book that's Spiritually Uplifting ...

Metaphors Using Earthly Attributes

    Everyone's Voice Matters!

Read Aloud

I'm glad to see a picture-book version of what happens in the news. This book explains in a light and metaphoric way the oil pipeline protests in '2020 on Native Lands. Teachers, moms, dads, can explain further, if need be, in their own words what the book represents if wanting to dig a little deeper into your Childs understanding.

I've noticed more and more children's book topics are presenting current events of what's going on in the world today and I think this particular book can be a beneficial tool when teaching the subject of Freedom of Speech and how a persons voice matters. Children are to know that people have the right to express themselves in a respectful, peaceful and lawful way.

Note to Teachers: Look for safe activism news about the pipelines for children so they get a broader understanding. Here's a link pertaining to youth activism.

Ursa Major and Minor -:- Big Bear, Little Bear!

 BIG Dipper, Little Dipper

Looking at the Stars! STEM Science

Let's Look Up at the Stars and Be Amazed!

"It is a perfect time to go out these Autumn nights to view the stars as most skies are clear now. It's just starting to get cool at night so don't forget that coat. Lay down and look up to see a plethora of stars and get the kids excited and wondering what the universe beholds!"

According to Space.com in the October sky, 'objects to see are; stars, constellations, and bright planets, the moon, and sometimes special events like meteor showers!'

Recently I used binoculars to view the moon and I was surprised how much I could see the markings on the surface in detail. Using the binoculars goes beyond the 'man in the moon' with the naked eye and gives you remarkable details. Use something to stabilize it because it can get shakey.

A great way to begin a lesson plan would be to read a book about stars and some of the constellations like for example, the above video. I've read a detailed science book on Ursa Major and Minor, and it is also entertaining, not dry. Most libraries should have an abundance on this topic if you'd prefer a tangible book, it's a good idea. Star charts if simplified don't look so overwhelming to little ones. Adding a figure, and using your imagination helps go along way as well.

As a suggestion try to point out the "Big Dipper" and "Little Dipper" like they do in this particular book by Franklyn Branley.  He gives a number of significant facts that are very interesting and useful. If your teaching in a classroom setting, have the kids report on what they saw and what they enjoyed most about looking at the stars. You could be encouraging a future NASA astronomer or engineer, who knows?

I bet all will want to do some extra credit if mini-marshmallows are involved. Draw out the Big Dipper with circles where the stars would be and print out one per child. Have the kids place marshmallows on each circle so they see the shape it creates; also have them count the marshmallows before eating them.

Be sure to include the North Star as being a special star for navigation purposes! Some sailing history!

Coloring Page of Ursa Major, and Minor; means Big Bear and Little Bear. Some refer to 7-star formation as the Big and Little Dipper.

Children Love Deep Ocean Picture Books! Get Reacquainted!

"OCEAN MEETS SKY"

By The Fan Brothers

A season with hardships can lead us to a place of awe...

Picturebooks can be so magical such as, "Ocean Meets Sky," by The Fan Brothers. The story may be written with few words, but the images are so ethereal and dreamlike that you want to step in and be apart of the dream, especially the image where you can look right into a blue whale's eye; it's very imaginative! Picture books for children can be just that a means to escape for a bit into a world of excitement. I know I can still dream like a child and it helps to read and escape when times are tough.

Synopsis: A young boy who's Grandpa has passed, remembers how much sailing meant to the both of them. " ...where the ocean meets the sky," was a place the two of them needed to go, but hadn't. When the boy builds a boat and sets out to find this magical place, he meets up with Grandpa in an ethereal way and reconnects with Grandpa once more.

Searching for a picture book on sailing for the summer to go along with a lesson plan, I called the library and had the librarian pick out five books she'd recommend on the topic. The library was closed from Covid-19 and was no longer walk-in available. I told her about my being a school teacher eager to help parents while kids were stuck at home.

I read to my virtual children on my channel Tumpsky and Mrs. Small, using puppets at times to create interesting add ons coinciding with the books. I believe I have over 500 books read.  The Librarian knew I wanted to create a 'Sailing Lesson Plan' and have the book be apart of it. I was very grateful the librarian could help contribute to my attaining resources. All I had to do was swing by the library and pick them up. Thank you, awesome library people!  On the Lesson Plan about Sailing, I do show the other book titles, but don't read them.

Family tradition is so important right now during these hard times, and finding ways to enjoy each other's company especially before bedtime is a beneficial thing. Whenever my mother or father read to me at night it became the traditional ritual that comforted me thru the night and eased the transition.  I was always allowed to pick out the book I wanted as well, and this gave me a sense of control. Sometimes I'd pick the same book over and over so pretty soon I could tell the story by heart myself. It helped me to want to learn to read.

BIRD Science -:- Family Discovery - A Trip to Effie Yeaw Nature Center!

Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Charmichael, CA

Kids love animals and nature, and whether they know it or not they are learning about science here at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center.

Effie Yeaw Nature Center

Outside the center. Is that a rainbow? Oh, yah!

Coming on a whim, I'm so glad I did. I was traveling to Charmichael, CA for a doctor's appointment and noticed on Google Maps a river and green open space very close to my location.  I decided to check out this hidden go-to place, hoping for an adventure.

What I found coming in was a wide-open space, grass, trees, a massive park. There are many places to picnic, there is golf to play, there are many nature trails. There is a riverfront that attracts many to swim and play in the water and play on the shore. It's a giant park with animals everywhere. The first thing I saw driving in were about eight wild turkeys fielding for breakfast, grey squirrels abundant everywhere, gathering and burying acorns I witnessed a man photographing a wild coyote out in the open grass as well. Something you don't see every day.

I parked at the lot entrance reading "Effie Yeaw Center" and walked into a quaintly groomed, magical, little park with a polliwog pond and pathway entrance. It is designed for easy access for the handicap to enjoy peaceful nature. A roundabout information hull displayed at the right to peruse.
I couldn't resist sitting down at one of the many picnic tables provided.
https://www.Sacnaturecenter.net  -2850 San Lorenzo Way, Carmichael, CA 95608

I wanted to take in the essence of the park as it encouraged me to walk back into time and be transformed into a simpler way of life. A dwelling, a thatched grass dome to the right pulled at my visual curiosity. On exhibit, three Nisenan/Maidu Native American Tulle homes, 9ft in diameter with open roof for the release of smoke in my assumption. Out in the front a large community rock, used for grinding acorns to feed the community. Such a different way of life for all to imagine. A wonderful comparison for open discussion for all.

Further up the path a butterfly garden. I could only imagine what full bloom would look like, as it was currently offseason for flowers, but I did imagine the beauty and the many buzzing visitors that might partake in the gathering of pollen and nectar.  With the cooling shade of tall Oak Trees,

Across the way, I spied the Effie Yeaw entrance and decided to go in. I was greeted with such a warm welcome, I felt very special. I asked a few questions and told them I was going to videotape and share on my Youtube Channel. They were happy to help.

Then, unexpectedly, one of the Nature Center guides came out with a wild bird surprise! There on her arm was a Cooper's Hawk named Orion. She told me all about him and how the center provides for the animals if they are unable to cope in the wild.

" Orion"

Inside you will discover a wonderful place of natural science, raptors, many different types of animals and birds and habitats. And more on the Nisenan/Maidu Native Americans.

Sing Song Ocean Delight You Might Like!

Over in the Ocean
by Marianne Berkes
Illustrated by Jeanette Canyon

Youtube Read Aloud on Tumpsky and Mrs. Small channel!

Found this lovely picture book over at the library! It sings to the song "Over in the Meadow," which most recognize if you've listened to children's songs here and there. The words match the song smoothly so it's easy to pick up very easily if you want to sing it, but it also reads just as well. I was amazed at the intricacies in the artwork, which is a type of play dough called Sculpy. The colors are marvelous, your children will enjoy it! Here is the video format read aloud.
